Sports in the UK

Sports in the UK

Rugby
Rugby is played in over 120 countries around the world.Generally, there are 15 players per team, though 7-players per team are also popular. Sometimes, there may also be 10-players per side. Each team must score as many points as possible. In rugby, carrying, passing, kicking and grounding the ball score points for the team. The team with the most number of points is the winner of the match.

Unusual sport in the UK:
The most unusual sport in the UK which must be very funny is the Pancake Racing - In which each participant carries a pancake in a frying pan. All the runners must toss their pancakes as they run and catch them in the frying pan. In Cyprus we have many traditional sports which we enjoy them in some celebrations and specifically on Easter. One of the most famous is the bag-running which people put their legs in a big bag and they have to run until the end.

Britain and knife crime

Crime and Justice

The last decades in Britain has been investigate that young people are carrying out a knife. Young people believe that they are more powerful and they will receive respect by doing that. Recently there have been a lot of knife crimes. The media, the schools and the British government are very worried about it and they trying to find a solution  about that.

The brother of Brooke Kinsella was murdered before two years.Miss Kinsella had made some recommendations about young people and knife crime which are:

  • anti-knife crime presentations for school children
  • more data sharing between police, schools and other agencies on local issues
  • a best practice website for local organisations
  • in order to stop them getting involved in knife crime, people ought to do more work with young children

About her brother Ben...

The police has been said that he has been in a pub called Shillibeers and he stabbed around 2am by a group of youths. After the event Ben was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he died. There was a witness who was unnamed he saw Ben lying down in a pool of blood. Ben was the 17th victim in 2008  who dies by knife crime.

Social security-The benefits system

Social security-The benefits system

The system in Cyprus has some differences from the system in the UK.In the UK the age of retire is 65 but the British government  is planning to scrap the default retirement age in the UK from October 2011.On the other hand, in Cyprus the retire age is 60 because there is a problem with many people who are not appointed yet.

There are several benefits basic for mothers in the UK if they have a child, such as:
  • Statutory Maternity Pay\
  • Maternity Allowance
  • Health in Pregnancy Grant

In the United Kingdom Jobseeker's Allowance is a form of unemployment benefit that is paid by the government to people who are unemployed and seeking work.

THE WELFARE STATE

THE WELFARE STATE

A welfare state is a concept of government where the state plays the primary role in the protection and promotion of the economic and social well-being of its citizens. The BBC article is comparing the poverty rate with other countries and Britain has remained stubbornly high.

The system of "cradle to grave" was devised  in 1940. It had been written by Sir William Beveridge, a highly regarded economist and expert on unemployment problems.

Newspaper-Media

Newspaper and Media

In Britain most newspapers are daily, they are publish every day.Other newspapers are published every Sunday. The difference between tabloids and the broadsheet is the size and the contents.Tabloids newspapers represent some shorts articles and too many pictures e.g.,Metro.However,the broadsheet newspapers   are more quality and represent big articles and more serious e.g The Guardian.

The headlines for three different newspaper on Wednesday (03/02/2011) were:

  • The Guardians: "Egypt protests erupt in fresh violence"
  • The Sun: "Blood on the Nile"
  • Metro: "It is a pirate life for Doctor Who"
As we can see The Guardians which has more quality content, represents world news and said  about serious facts. On the other hand Metro and the Sun are more about gossip and more interesting news. There is also one similarity on the headlines which most newspapers do not use verbs.

Education

Differences between education system in the UK and Cyprus

The education system in Cyprus has some small differences in contrast the UK system. For example children from Cyprus start primary school at the age of 6.Primary education consisted by 6 classes started from A-Στ.Also there are no exams for it.
After the summer holidays children changed school called Gymnasio which is like the Secondary school.Gymnasio consisted by 3 classes from A-C.Moreover,there are 2 terms which students took there grades. The first term ends before Christmas and the second one before summer holidays. Each module is marked with letters, the best mark is A the worse is E.
The next three years are not nessesary.Students change again school called Lyckio.Lyckio has the same educate rules like Gymnasio with the difference that every module marked with numbers from 1-20.In the end of the last term students give exams just for the main courses which they decide.Lyckio is similar with the Higher education.
Finally,at the age of 18 boys must go to the army for 2 years and girls can register for a university.

FOOD AND DRINK

Traditional  food and drinks of  the UK

British people are used to eat fried food for example eggs, bacon, sausages, chips. They also used to eat a snack for lunch and a meal for dinner. The British cuzine is famous for the English breakfast as many luxury hotels served it.Also the famous take away food which originated in the United Kingdom is fish an chips. Moreover, curry has become very famous in Britain and is said that curry has become the new take away food.

On the other hand, British pubs are very unique because is different from any other public place in Britain.Britain would not be a sociable country without pubs.Pubs in Britain they used to served only beers but nowadays they also serve coffee and tea.

People from Greece they found it really strange and different the fact that you don't see any women in the pubs and if you see everyone surprised.
